Facing Hunger Pangs After A Meal?

Often for diabetes patients, hunger pangs arrive at least expected times. It may occur that you have taken your meals or snack and you experience hunger again but your next meal or snack is not yet due. In these circumstances, you can shift your meal time ahead or take some free food based on how much time is left before your next meal and what your glucose levels are.

If you are feeling frequently hungry between meals, then perhaps, something is missing in your diet plan and schedule. It would be wise to meet your dietician and revise your diet plan if necessary. If you have been lately exercising more, maybe your body needs more food for compensating the extra calories consumed. Nevertheless, if you do not understand why this is happening, seek help of a doctor or dietician immediately because it may be a signal that the body is giving out.

If you are a patient of type 3 diabetes, you might need to have something to eat before going to bed so that your body has sufficient sugar levels to last till the morning. This is especially true if you are taking insulin injections before retiring for the night. It is possible that your blood sugar goes too low when you sleep causing problems. If these situations don't apply to you but you still feel hungry, indulge in some free food. Maybe a bouillon (beef or chicken broth) may help you to tide over the hunger pangs and enable you to sleep.

It is important that you eat something if you are hungry at night and your blood sugar levels are down. If you find that you are hungry again and again at bed time, maybe you are not taking enough food at dinner. Another alternative is trying to add a protein or a carbohydrate and check whether it makes a difference.
